French Hunt Unknown Wild Cat Near Disneyland

200 French police and members of the armed forces hunting for a mysterious wild cat have a breakthrough in their investigation: at least It isn’t a tiger.

Tiger-in-Paris

A two-day search by some 200 French police and members of the armed forces for a wild cat roaming through towns and across a major highway came to one conclusion Friday: It isn’t a tiger.

The wild cat caught in several fuzzy photographs in the town of Montevrain was spotted again Friday morning by truckers on a main route between Paris and eastern France.

But in a statement late Friday, the regional administration near the search site said experts have concluded that the wandering animal isn’t a tiger, but a feline of an unknown species. France’s national hunting office could not be reached for comment.

One theory is that the mystery cat could be a lynx — the wild cat once common in France before being hunted out of existence. It was reintroduced in France in the 1970s, according to the wildlife group Ferus.

But the nearest known lynx habitat, the Vosges Mountains, is 350 kilometers (215 miles) away from where the cat was first spotted Thursday.

Residents of Montevrain and two other towns were urged to stay indoors — but most people seemed to be taking the big cat hunt in stride, even as a helicopter buzzed over woods east of Paris.

“He was also seen by truck drivers on the road,” said Christian Robache, the mayor of Montevrain. A Total gas station near the sighting was briefly closed, and police officers guarded a local school Friday as children arrived for class.

But the operator of Disneyland Paris, one of Europe’s top tourist destinations, said it wasn’t taking any special precautions because the animal isn’t deemed a threat. The theme park in the region is surrounded by a large wall.

Secret U.S. Spy Planes Target Your Cell Phone

A secret U.S. spy program used fake cell phone towers attached to airplanes to scan citizens’ cell phones and collect data, the Wall Street Journal reports.

A secret U.S. spy program used fake cell phone towers attached to airplanes to scan citizens’ cell phones and collect their data, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The scheme, carried out by the Technical Operations Group of the U.S. Marshals, uses devices known as “dirtboxes” to mimic powerful cell tower signs. These dirtboxes are strong enough to trick phones to automatically switch over to their signals, even if a real tower is nearby. The small-winged airplanes operate from at least five major airports, and they can fly over most of the U.S.

When these planes go over cities, they cast a broad airplane data dragnet that sucks up information from phones even if they’re not in use:

The U.S. Marshals Service program, which became fully functional around 2007, operates Cessna aircraft from at least five metropolitan-area airports, with a flying range covering most of the U.S. population, according to people familiar with the program.

Planes are equipped with devices—some known as “dirtboxes” to law-enforcement officials because of the initials of the Boeing Co. unit that produces them—which mimic cell towers of large telecommunications firms and trick cellphones into reporting their unique registration information.

The technology in the two-foot-square device enables investigators to scoop data from tens of thousands of cellphones in a single flight, collecting their identifying information and general location, these people said.

One source said connecting to the fake roving towers can briefly disconnect calls, and that authorities were trying to figure out a way to make sure it didn’t mess up calls to 911.

The sources said that these sneaky spy planes have already gotten results, helping catch drug dealers and killers, but did not name names.

If the details in the WSJ are accurate, this program has disturbing similarities to the NSA surveillance programs exposed last year.

American Civil Liberties Union chief technologist Christopher Soghoian told the WSJ that this was “a dragnet surveillance program. It’s inexcusable and it’s likely—to the extent judges are authorizing it—[that] they have no idea of the scale of it.”

“There are some serious and troubling legal questions about this program,” EFF Staff Attorney Hanni Fakhoury told me. “It’s important to note this is very different from the government getting this information from a phone company. In the last few months, many state courts and legislatures have required law enforcement get a probable cause search warrant to use these devices. The US Marshals should explain how this program works and what kind of court authorization, if any, they’re obtaining to fly planes with ‘dirtboxes.'”

The fake phone tower signals used work even on phones with encryption, like the iPhone 6, so there’s virtually no way phone makers could’ve prevented this from happening.

The Justice Department has neither confirmed or denied the WSJ report.

Is The Government Hiding Planet X?

In 1983, scientists observed a mysterious planet-sized object at the edge of our solar system. Was it the long sought-for Planet X? Since then, NASA has done their best to disprove its existence. Could the government be hiding a whole planet? Why would they do this?

Scientists Explore Mysterious Siberian Crater

The Siberian Times just published amazing new pictures of an expedition of scientist who descended inside the mysterious crater on the Yamal Peninsula, northern Siberia. They are collecting data because its origin remains a mystery, and there may be a Bermuda Triangle connection.

According to the Russian scientist Igor Yeltsov—deputy head of the Trofimuk Institute—both the Siberian hole and the Bermuda Triangle may share the same phenomena:

There is a version that the Bermuda Triangle is a consequence of gas hydrates reactions. They start to actively decompose with methane ice turning into gas. It happens in an avalanche-like way, like a nuclear reaction, producing huge amounts of gas. That makes ocean to heat up and ships sink in its waters mixed with a huge proportion of gas. The same leads to the air to get supersaturated with methane, which makes the atmosphere extremely turbulent and lead to aircraft crashes.

The director of the Russian Centre of Arctic Exploration, Vladimir Pushkarev, however, says they are still collecting data:

I’ve heard about this Bermuda Triangle idea, but I repeat, our scientists need to work on materials first and only then draw some definite conclusions. At the moment we don’t have enough information.

Pushkarev says that it was easy to descend while the hole is solid because of the ice. In the summer the sides of hole were soft. At the bottom the lake—which is about at least 10 meters deep—is frozen.

Watch Live Coverage of Rosetta Comet Landing

Actually landing the probe on the comet has been described as “seven hours of terror” by a scientist involved with the project. Watch live streaming here!

The Philae lander is scheduled to touch down on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on November 12, 2014 at 15:35 UTC. We on Earth – 300 million miles (500 million km) away – won’t know the lander has set down successfully until a signal is received back at about 16:02 UTC. Both NASA and ESA will provide live online coverage of this first-ever attempted landing on a comet.

The final stage of the mission — actually landing the probe on the comet — has been described as “seven hours of terror” by a scientist involved with the project, and that terror is about to begin.

Here are some times to pay attention to, if you want to watch the event live.

– Overall, NASA’s live coverage is from  1400 to 1630 UTC

– NASA’s live commentary will include excerpts of the ESA coverage from 1400 to 1500 UTC

– NASA will continue carrying ESA’s commentary from 1500 UTC to 16:30 UTC

Watch all NASA coverage here.

Translate UTC to your time zone here.

– ESA’s live coverage begins on Tuesday, November 11, a day before the landing, at 1900 UTC. Watch ESA’s coverage here.

Rosetta spacecraft will do the equivalent of transferring an object from one speeding bullet to another, when it tries to place its Philae lander on its comet. Read more about the mission’s dramatic attempt to land on a comet here.

After landing, Philae will obtain the first images ever taken from a comet’s surface. It also will drill into the surface to study the composition and witness close up how a comet changes as its exposure to the sun varies.

Philae can remain active on the surface for approximately two-and-a-half days. Its “mothership” – the Rosetta spacecraft – will remain in orbit around the comet through 2015. The orbiter will continue detailed studies of the comet as it approaches the sun for its July 2015 perihelion (closest point), and then moves away.

Comets are considered primitive building blocks of the solar system that are literally frozen in time. They may have played a part in “seeding” Earth with water and, possibly, the basic ingredients for life.
